Behind the Art
Bison No. 1 was made with American history in mind. Specifically, the time of Manifest Destiny, which began in the 1830s when European settlers moved West in search of better opportunities. During this era — between approx. 1830-1885 — more than 40 million bison were killed. Beyond being essential to Western expansion and Native American life, bison are a keystone species, which means their environment relies on them as well. The hidden images allude to the bison’s history and importance as it relates to both humans and nature.
